Anaerobic adhesives, THREAD LOCKERS, retaining compounds, THREAD SEALANT, GASKETING COMPOUNDS, are one-part adhesives that cure on active metal surfaces in the absence of oxygen in the bond line. The requirement for lack of oxygen means these chemistries do not bond well to glass, plastic or rubber.

This term is often reserved to describe adhesives with high shear strength (supporting more than 1,000 pounds per square inch or psi) and good environmental resistance.
